Gel Polish has everything going for it: super easy application, mirror shine worthy of a salon manicure, long lasting wear, we love it. But when it comes to removing gel polish, things can get tricky. Electric files or acetone soaks can cause real damage and your nails end up paying the price. The good news: there are gentle and effective methods to remove your gel polish at home without ruining your beautiful nails. Here are our tips to combine a high performance, glossy, long lasting manicure with healthy nails.
Why should you be careful when removing gel polish?
It is often when you remove gel polish that your nails become the most fragile. Scraping, excessive filing, prolonged acetone soaks, all these removal techniques can damage the natural nail plate and leave your nails soft, brittle or peeling.
Why can intensive filing or drilling damage your nails?
Unlike regular polish, which comes off easily, gel polish requires extra care during removal. One common technique involves scraping away the polish layer using a nail file, an electric drill or a buffer sponge until the color disappears. Frequently used in salons, this method requires real skill. Without proper control, it can quickly damage the nail. The risks include:
- Thin nails with damaged keratin: keratin is the essential protein that forms the structure of the nail, giving it strength and flexibility. When the upper layers are over filed, natural nails can become weakened and struggle to regenerate properly.
- Ridged, soft or brittle nails: aggressive movements can leave visible and lasting marks on the nail surface. Deep down, they disrupt the natural balance of the nail matrix.
- Dull nails: once keratin is damaged, the surface becomes rough, matte and loses its natural shine.
- Lifting of the nail plate: the nail may slightly detach, creating a space where moisture and bacteria can settle, increasing the risk of infection.
An electric file used without proper control can cause lasting damage to the nail plate.
Why do pure acetone or harsh removers weaken your nails?
Acetone is often seen as the ultimate solution because it dissolves layers of polish quickly. Simply place a cotton pad soaked in acetone remover on the nail for a few minutes to remove gel polish, sometimes finishing by scraping away residue with an orange stick or nail file. Effective, yes, but not particularly kind to your nails.
Acetone remover does more than dissolve polish. It also strips away the natural oily film that protects the nail plate, which dries out and weakens your nails. It can also dry out the cuticles that shield your nails from external stress. Finally, acetone may worsen irritation on sensitive skin or skin prone to tiny invisible cracks.
The gentle routine for removing gel polish at home
Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools for removing gel polish without damaging your nails.
What you need for respectful removal
- Prepare around ten cotton pads sized to fit your nails. Avoid loose cotton wool, which tends to fray and cling to polish.
- A gentle acetone free remover.
- Removal clips or small pieces of aluminum foil.
- A wooden orange stick, which is gentler than metal tools.
- A cuticle oil or nourishing treatment.
Step 1: prepare your tools
Generously soak each cotton pad with gentle remover. If you are wearing a Green Flash™ manicure, use the Green Flash™ acetone free remover, designed for fast and effective removal of Green Flash™ gel polish without drying out the nail, thanks to its castor oil enriched formula.
Green Flash™ gentle remover and removal clips duo, an essential for removing gel polish the gentle way.
Step 2: soften the polish gently
Place a soaked cotton pad directly onto each nail and secure it with a removal clip to keep the remover in contact with the polish. If you do not have clips, wrap a small piece of aluminum foil around each fingertip.
Important: respect the recommended timing according to your routine. With Green Flash™ gel polish, the time depends on the Top Coat you used:
- With the Green Flash™ Top Coat, the polish lifts in just 1 to 2 minutes.
- With the Top Coat Xrem Flash™, allow around 10 minutes for the polish to lift.
Just a few minutes are enough to remove your Green Flash™ gel polish using the peel off method.
Step 3: remove the polish gently
Remove the clips or foil and cotton pads to reveal the result. The unique advantage of the Green Flash™ routine is its peel off removal: under the action of the remover, the polish layer lifts instantly without leaving residue.
If a little polish remains, gently lift it using a wooden orange stick, without forcing. If necessary, reapply a soaked cotton pad for a few moments.

Step 4: hydrate and care for your nails after removal

Enriched with six botanical oils including sweet almond and coconut oil, it soothes and supports fiber regeneration.

Extra tips to protect your nails
Here are a few healthy habits to adopt for strong nails in the long term:
Ideal frequency for gel polish manicures
For a balanced and long lasting gel polish routine, we recommend leaving your nails to rest for 1 to 2 weeks between applications. It gives you time to pamper them and allow their natural balance to recover.
Strengthen your nails and cuticles daily
Incorporate these simple steps into your routine:
- Hydrate your nails and cuticles with a nourishing oil or a targeted treatment such as the Complete Serum. Apply one drop to each nail and gently massage, including the cuticles, until fully absorbed. It feels amazing and your nails will thank you.
- Stimulate regeneration with a strengthening treatment that redensifies the nail plate. Enriched with plant based keratin and fortifying actives, the Nail Strengthening Serum boosts keratin production and supports nail growth. Apply 1 to 3 times per day on bare nails for 5 to 7 days.
- Combine make up and nail repair in one step with our Active™ treatment polishes. Gloss effect, smoothing, strengthening or illuminating, choose the Active™ polish that enhances and fortifies your nails beautifully until your next gel polish manicure.
Daily nail care is the best way to maintain strong, resilient nails.
Aggressive removal can cause far more damage than applying gel polish or even gel extensions. The only removal technique worth choosing is one that respects the integrity of your nail. Whether you remove your gel polish in a salon or at home, always follow a safe protocol to keep your nails healthy and ready for your next manicure.
