Trending Nail Layering: we're adopting it!

6 min to read

What if your nails received the same attention as your face? With the nail layering trend, nail care is entering a whole new dimension. Inspired by Korean skincare and Japanese manicure rituals, this technique relies on the application of several layers of treatments to protect and enhance the skin. Today, the same philosophy applies to nail care and nail art. Discover everything you need to know about nail polish layers and how to master this approach.

What is nail layering?

The concept of layering

Derived from the English word “layer”, layering involves applying several layers of beauty products, sometimes even fragrances, in a very precise order. The goal is to create a care routine that is both rich and personalized. While European rituals are often minimalist, Asian skincare routines and Middle Eastern fragrance traditions embrace accumulation to amplify results and deliver targeted care. Each layer plays a specific role such as hydration, nourishment or detox. Today this philosophy also applies to manicures. It is used both in nail care routines and in nail art, where layering nail polish colors allows you to experiment with shades and effects while building beautiful nail polish layers.

Combining several treatment layers to care for nails deeply is the core principle behind nail polish layers.

The origins of nail layering

Nail layering draws inspiration from Japanese manicure techniques. These rituals promote healthy, naturally radiant nails through the successive application of nail care and polish layers. This search for natural perfection echoes the clean nails trend and reflects a growing desire for routines that respect both health and the environment. At Manucurist, the idea of layering nail polish and treatments feels completely natural. Our approach to manicures has always been built around carefully structured nail polish layers that combine care and color.

How many layers should you apply?

Traditional Japanese manicure follows a complete care protocol built around three layers of products:

  • A nourishing paste enriched with natural active ingredients, massaged into the nail to strengthen its structure.
  • A mineral powder used to polish the nail plate and enhance its natural shine.
  • A plant oil that hydrates and protects the nail over time.

This three layer principle creates synergy between treatments and enhances their benefits. When more than four nail polish layers or treatment layers are applied, the effectiveness decreases. The active ingredients in the last layers struggle to penetrate because they are blocked by the previous layers.

Healthy nails routine

Healthy nails are strong nails that grow regularly without imperfections. However, they still need maintenance to stay in great condition.

👉Our nail layering routine for healthy nails: for two weeks, apply Active™ Glow Raspberry as nail polish layers three times per week without removing the previous layers. At the same time apply the Complete Serum twice per day and massage the nail and surrounding area to soften and stimulate healthy nail growth. As an additional step apply the Nourishing Nail Pen whenever you wish. This easy to carry treatment strengthens nails and cuticles throughout the day.

Ridged nails routine

Often called nail wrinkles, ridges can appear due to aging, health issues, emotional stress or nutritional deficiencies. The good news is that there are effective ways to restore smooth and strong nails.

👉Our nail layering routine for ridged nails: for two weeks gently buff the nail surface using the preparation nail file to smooth it. Then apply Active™ Smooth every two days as layering nail polish, without removing previous layers. Twice per day massage a drop of Nourishing Cuticle Oil into nails and cuticles. Finally apply the S.O.S. Mask three nights per week in a thick layer and remove it in peel off form the following morning.

Damaged nails routine

Repeated Gel Polish manicures without breaks or proper care, or aggressive removal methods, can weaken nails. The result is thin, splitting or brittle nails.

👉Our nail layering routine for damaged nails: for two weeks, or up to four if nails are very damaged, massage Nourishing Cuticle Oil daily into nails and cuticles. Every two days apply the strengthening treatment Nail Strengthening Serum to bare nails and allow it to fully absorb. Finally apply the S.O.S. Mask three nights per week in a thick layer and remove it in peel off form the following morning.

Soft nails routine

Excess humidity, frequent Gel Polish manicures, pollution or nutritional deficiencies can all cause soft nails. Fortunately, solutions exist.

👉Our nail layering routine for soft nails: during the first week apply the strengthening treatment Nail Strengthening Serum to bare nails every three days and allow it to fully absorb. Massage nails and cuticles twice daily with a drop of Nourishing Cuticle Oil. During the second week apply the Strengthening Base Coat every two days as nail polish layers without removing the previous layers, while continuing daily application of Nourishing Cuticle Oil.

Active™ layering

Always innovating in nail care, Manucurist created the Active™ range. These formulas combine treatment and makeup benefits, caring deeply for natural nails while enhancing their appearance.

Manucurist Active™ treatment polishes

Each Active™ polish applies easily without a base coat or top coat, dries quickly and targets a specific action:

  • Active Glow™ is a transparent treatment polish enriched with AHAs and sweet almond oil that nourishes nails and leaves them with a glossy rosy glow depending on the fruit extract used.
  • Active™ Smooth is a CC Polish that smooths and evens out the nail surface thanks to its formula enriched with castor fibers. A favorite for ridged nails.
  • Active™ Bright is a brightening treatment polish that strengthens nails and enhances their natural whiteness thanks to lemon extracts.
  • Active™ Shine, enriched with beetroot extract with hydrating and antioxidant properties, illuminates and repairs nails.
  • Active™ Plump contains plant collagen and peach extracts that deeply hydrate and create a visually plumping effect.
  • Active™ Blur acts like a perfecting filter, smoothing irregularities and creating a soft pink blurred finish.

The Active™ range, treatment polishes that enhance nails in a single gesture.

How to layer nail polish

With the Active™ range, nail polish layers open up new creative possibilities. By adjusting the number of layers of the same polish or combining two different Active™ formulas, you can personalize the result while benefiting from each treatment. Smooth and Glow. Shine and Bright. Plump and Blur. Experiment and find your favorite combination when layering nail polish.

⚠️Always allow each layer to dry properly before applying the next one and avoid exceeding three nail polish layers. Too many layers will increase drying time and may cause the polish to wrinkle or chip.

Layering and nail art: playing with colors and effects

Two color layering

By layering nail polish colors you can create unique and on trend shades. The key is choosing the right combination. Pair an intense pigmented base color with a translucent polish that has glitter or pearlescent effects to add depth and shine. Some favorite combinations include Midnight with Mermaid, Hortencia with Mermaid or Hollyhock with Moon.

👉You can create these looks using Green™ polishes or Green Flash™ Gel Polish. Just avoid mixing products from different ranges.

Glazed mirror or glitter layering

Applied over a base color of Green™ or Green Flash™ Gel Polish, effect powders make it easy to create a trendy manicure. For icy Glazed nails inspired by Hailey Bieber, White Glazed and Pink Glazed powders are spectacular. For extra shine the Mirror Effect powder creates a stunning chrome mirror finish. Applied over Red Velvet red, Milky White or Hortencia pink, the result is magnetic.

With more than ten glitter shades available, creativity has no limits.
