Top coat: what is it for and how do you choose the right one?

7 min to read

A beautiful manicure deserves protection! And that is exactly what a top coat is for. As the final step of your manicure routine, it is often overlooked when it should not be. Acting as an invisible shield against cracks and chips, a layer of top coat is much more than simple protection. Glossy, matte or glittery, this finishing polish also enhances every manicure and helps your favorite nail polish colors last longer. Here is everything you need to know about this must have!

What is a top coat?

A top coat is a transparent finishing polish applied as the final layer over colored nail polish. Its formula is designed to seal and protect your manicure or nail art. It smooths the surface, improves durability and enhances the color with a specific finish.

As the name suggests, it is applied as the final step in a manicure routine, after the base coat and two coats of color. Once the color is completely dry, apply a thin layer of top coat and allow it to dry naturally or cure it under a UV or LED lamp, depending on the system you are using.

👉 Good to know: we strongly recommend using a finishing polish from the same brand and product range as your nail polish. Their formulas are developed to work together and deliver optimal performance in terms of wear and shine.

What is a top coat used for?

When you are short on time and your nail polish is already dry and shiny, it can be tempting to stop there. Big mistake! Skipping the top coat means missing out on the ultimate insurance policy for your manicure. Here are five good reasons never to leave it out:

  • It protects your nail polish from scratches and premature chipping, acting as a protective barrier for polished nails.
  • It extends the wear of your nail polish. A properly applied finishing coat can give you several extra days of manicure perfection.
  • It boosts the shine of colored nail polish. Colors appear richer, deeper and more vibrant.
  • It secures nail art. Designs, gradients, effect powders, gems or stickers, it seals your creations to help them stay flawless for as long as possible.
  • It creates customized finishes. Glossy gel effect, velvety matte finish, glittery or iridescent effects, choose the finish that best reflects your style.

Whether applied over color or a glazed effect powder, a top coat helps protect your manicure.

What is the difference between a base coat and a top coat?

It can sometimes be difficult to tell them apart, but they serve very different purposes.

👉 A base coat is the first step of any manicure. It is applied before colored nail polish, directly onto the natural nail. Its role is to create a smooth, even surface that makes color easier to apply and improves wear. It also acts as a protective layer, preventing pigments from penetrating the keratin layers of the nail. Some base coats also double as treatments, nourishing and strengthening nails beneath the color.

👉 A top coat, on the other hand, works on the surface. It forms a protective layer that shields color from external aggressors and improves the durability of your nail polish. The result is intense color, exceptional shine and a flawless manicure that lasts longer, with less risk of scratches or chips. It also offers a wide range of finishes, including glossy gel effect, matte, glitter, pearlescent and cat eye effects.

They are therefore two completely different products with complementary roles and are definitely not interchangeable!

Can you use a top coat on its own?

Technically, yes. Applied to bare nails, it still acts as a protective shield and gives that signature glossy touch. That said, it is not designed to be applied directly to natural nails.

If you want to protect your natural nails while strengthening and enhancing them, go for one of these options instead:

  • Fortifying Base Coat: a hardening polish that helps strengthen soft, thin nails and improve their resistance to breakage.
  • S.O.S. Base Coat: a treatment base coat that helps repair very damaged, brittle or splitting nails by supporting their natural regeneration.
  • Active™ treatment polishes, combining nail care and beauty for everyday wear, with 6 make up inspired effects to choose from.
